The Pie: AI's impact on humans gets a nutrition label

Quick answer
THC drinks switch gears, a 26.6-point grocery gap, Parm you can clip to your bag, Ghana cocoa + a rice ship turned back

Hey Pies,
What a week. We celebrated World Food Day and closed out Hispanic Heritage Month, two good reasons to honor everyone who grows, cooks and pays for what we eat. I was in Atlanta for Venture Atlanta, spotlighting the best companies from the Southern coast through Texas. Lots of great ideas. There's definitely a shift toward defense and resiliency, but also more media and lifestyle, like horse riding software and events. Grateful to share and present.
My headlines: hemp THC drinks face a 0.4 mg cap on Dec 11, Walmart and Whole Foods sit 26.6 points apart, and a rice ship in the Philippines got turned around over its paperwork.
The thread I keep seeing: people still want the treat and the ritual, just cheaper, cleaner or legal. The brands that swap the right ingredient fast keep the shelf.
Here's what we're tracking.
Stay easy,

World Food Day, and the people at the table

Photo: FAO, World Food Day campaign page (fao.org/world-food-day).
World Food Day, Fri Oct 16. FAO's theme this year is "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow." As a fifth generation food entrepreneur, here's my take: innovation in food is rarely a new molecule. It's a farmer with better data, a supplier with a backup route, a family recipe that finally gets a shelf. We said it at NYC Climate Week, and I still believe it.
Hispanic Heritage Month recap (Sept 15 to Oct 15). The shelf got louder. 7-Eleven launched Selección 7, a private-label line with conchas, mantecadas and chamoy peach rings. LALA grew its U.S. cheese lineup from 3 to 14 SKUs, citing Circana data that Hispanic cheese is a $1.1 billion category growing 11% a year over four years, versus 2% for mainstream cheese. Culture isn't a seasonal endcap. It's a growth line.

Warm Fillings
1. Hemp drinks get their last call. Calm is the new buzz.
A federal rule signed last November caps finished hemp products at 0.4 mg of total THC per container. A September funding bill pushed the start to Dec 11, 2026. Most of today's THC drinks are out unless Congress acts.

Cocoa
Stay easy, Riana & Team 🌱 In this issue 🌱 Community Pie: World Food Day + Hispanic Heritage Month 🥤 Warm Fillings: Hemp's last call, the grocery gap, eating out…
Cocoa: 228 kcal and 19.6 g protein per 100 g; top producer Côte d'Ivoire (36.1%, 2024); 29.1 kg CO2e per kg.
Explore Cocoa dataBrands aren't waiting. Cann launched 0MG, a zero-THC line with magnesium and L-theanine, and Cantrip's founders spun out kanna-based On the Brightside. The Nowadays founders put Unwind in about 1,000 Walmart stores on Oct 1, and Walmart built a "Mood & Mind" set led by Recess.

Graphic: Journey Foods. Sources linked above.
The takeaway: the occasion survived. The ingredient didn't. If your product leans on one regulated input, know your swap before a regulator picks it for you.
2. The grocery price gap just got wider.
Goldman Sachs priced the same 38 items at six retailers on Oct 5. Walmart came in 15.7% below the group average. Whole Foods was 10.9% above. We dug into what that 26.6-point spread means for brands in The grocery price gap.

Chart: Journey Foods. Source: Goldman Sachs grocery pricing survey via Investing.com and TheStreet.
The takeaway: if you're in both stores, your shopper sees both prices. Know your cost per unit by ingredient, so you can defend the premium or close it.
3. Eating out is a $3,945 habit.
The average U.S. household spent $3,945 on food away from home in 2024, per BLS, almost flat from 2023. We broke down the trade-offs in Cooking at home vs. eating out. Every dollar that stays home is a shot for a grocery brand that tastes like a night out.
4. Organic isn't automatically greener.
Our World in Data found no clear winner. Organic often means fewer pesticide impacts and more on-farm biodiversity, but lower yields mean more land per kilogram of food. My rule: claims need data behind them, per product, not per label.
5. Plant-based isn't dead. It's getting sorted.
U.S. plant-based meat and seafood sales fell 10% in dollars in 2025 to about $1.0 billion, per GFI and SPINS. But 62% of buyers came back more than once, and bold flavors and shreds grew. I wrote about what the survivors do differently in Be a long-term and profitable plant-based brand.

The Slice
Cocoa in Ghana, rice in the Philippines
Ghana: more per tonne, less to sell. COCOBOD raised the 2026/27 farmgate price 2.4% to GH¢42,400 a tonne on Sept 25. A new law guarantees farmers at least 70% of the export price, so it now moves with world prices. The catch: COCOBOD expects a 650,000 tonne crop, 13% below last season, per NewsGhana.

Philippines: one line on the paperwork turned a ship around. The Department of Agriculture cancelled the import clearance for a P700 million cargo of Vietnamese rice, Philstar reported Oct 15. The buyer applied for 25 percent broken rice, then learned the shipment was 5 percent broken, and the contract had expired. Imports had already passed all of 2025 by Sept 24, and the DA says 2026 could top 5 million metric tons, per BusinessMirror.

The takeaway: in both countries, it came down to the records: a law, a contract, a spec on a permit. Clean supplier data is how you see it coming.
Trend Watch
Bag charms are in, even in the cheese aisle
Kraft Pocket Parm. Kraft Natural Cheese made Pocket Parm, a mini grated cheese bottle that clips onto your bag with a collectible charm. It comes in the original Parmesan plus Tomato Basil Parmesan, Garlic Herb Parmesan and Cheddar. A Kraft truck is handing them out in Los Angeles from Oct 13 and Orlando the week of Oct 26, ahead of full size versions nationwide in January 2027, per Dairy Foods. As Hayley Thorfinnson put it on LinkedIn: "bag charms are all the rage, from lip gloss to labubus the trend continues to drive loyalty, love and a little bit of FOMO"

Spicy Chick-fil-A Sauce. It joins the permanent menu nationwide Nov 16, Chick-fil-A's first new permanent sauce since Sweet & Spicy Sriracha in 2016. It's the classic sauce with spicy peppers and a touch of sweetness, in dipping cups and 8 oz bottles, per USA TODAY.

The takeaway: the format is the feature. A pocket bottle tests three flavors before they hit shelves. A spicy twist stretches a sauce people already love. If I were launching, I'd track pack sizes, flavors and early demand together to see which idea earns a full run.

AI just got a nutrition label
"We check the label on what we eat. Why not on what we think with?" That's the pitch behind the AI Nutrition Label from MIT Media Lab's Advancing Humans with AI (AHA) program. Their cereal box labels for Gemini, DeepSeek, ChatGPT, Claude and Grok grade how each model affects people across psychological, physical and social domains, from avoiding sycophancy to promoting learning.

The team tested ten leading models across 48,540 conversations, and every score traces back to its metrics and transcripts, per ImpactBench. As AHA put it on Oct 7: "We demand labels for what we put into our bodies, yet accept opacity in the systems shaping our minds."

The takeaway: I love this one. The food label inspired AI transparency, and Journey brings it back to food: product, ingredient and supplier data in one view, every claim traced to its source.

The takeaway: fish sticks with a sauce flight is peak food innovation. And on World Food Day week, I'll say it loud: no shame in the food bank. Community feeds community. 🌱
