The Pie: Cocoa Came Down. Candy Didn't.

Quick answer
Why chocolate costs more when cocoa got cheaper, Aldi vs. Lidl, fake lemon juice, protein snacks + 'put them groceries on sale'

Hey Pies,
Halloween is a week out, and my feed has turned into one long price check. One meme keeps coming back, and it says it best: "dear Black Friday... we all have big tvs now, put them groceries on sale."
This week, chocolate still costs more even though cocoa got cheaper. Aldi and Lidl are racing to the bottom on Thanksgiving. SNAP got tighter for millions of families, and the FDA caught fake lemon juice at the border.
The economics are stubborn. Cocoa is down about half from its peak, yet candy and gum prices rose 7.7% in the year to September. Grocery prices actually dipped 0.1% in September, but gas is up 34.2%, so the cart feels pricier even when it isn't. Economists call it rockets and feathers: prices shoot up fast and float down slow.
The thread: nobody is skipping the ritual. People are hunting harder for the deal and reading the label while they do it. The brands that win the holidays will be the ones that can explain their price.
Here's what we're tracking, and what we think it means.
Stay easy,

The World Food Prize turns 40. The Borlaug Dialogue opened Oct 20 in Des Moines under the theme "Before Hunger Wins," with 1,200+ leaders from 65+ countries. That night, 1,000+ volunteers with Meals from the Heartland packed 990,864 meals in one hour, a new Guinness World Records title. The goal was 600,000, and the old record was 530,064. Food safety pioneer Huub Lelieveld is this year's laureate. Food safety finally gets its flowers.

Warm Fillings
1. Thanksgiving is a price war now.
PwC expects Thanksgiving to cost about $90 a family, up from $88, with turkey up nearly 8% and cranberries nearly 15%. Butter is down 10%, so the rolls are safe. Aldi's meal for 10 is $38.74; Lidl's is $35.86 for loyalty members, plus price cuts on 100 products each week in November, per Grocery Dive.

A Black Friday meme that has been making the rounds since at least 2022. Tap the image for our grocery price gap breakdown.
The takeaway: the holiday basket is a comparison tool now. Know your cost per serving before a retailer asks you to fund the promo.
2. Groceries dipped. Nobody noticed.
Food-at-home prices fell 0.1% in September (up 1.8% on the year), while gasoline is up 34.2%, per the BLS.
The takeaway: shoppers feel the pump and blame the cart. Value is a feeling as much as a price.
3. Snacks got a job.
PepsiCo's "permissible" brands like SunChips and PopCorners now bring in roughly $3 billion a year, with Doritos Protein and SunChips Fiber on the way, per Brew Markets. Gallup says 15% of U.S. adults have used a GLP-1 for weight loss.
The takeaway: protein and fiber are the new flavor extensions. Make sure the claim survives the ingredient list.
4. Your grocery list has a co-pilot.
Safeway shoppers can now build a cart inside ChatGPT, and Sainsbury's SmartLists turn a photo of a written list into real products.
The takeaway: if an agent builds the cart, your product data is your shelf. Try ChatGPT or Claude with Journey through our MCP server.
5. Salt gets a sub.

Quick Bites
● LeBron James asked his Instagram followers where to get seafood potato greens in Philly for his wife Savannah, and it sent fans looking up a West African stew that has been going viral as influencers post their own versions (The Philadelphia Inquirer).
● Bourbon is buying its way into F1. Jim Beam, a founding partner of the new Cadillac team, says sponsoring the cars has already lifted whiskey sales in markets where it invested, and it co-hosted a Cadillac "ranch house" in Austin for US Grand Prix fans this weekend (Motorsport.com).
● Cade Cunningham, the NBA All-Star who has been dairy-free for years, teamed up with Daiya on dairy-free Cheesecake Bites: 100 calories for 2 to 3 bites, $8.99 a bag, now at Kroger, Sprouts and Meijer (PR Newswire).
The takeaway: the fastest way into a shopping cart this month went through a feed or a fan zone: one Instagram story, one bourbon on a race car, one athlete's own diet.

SNAP's new math
More than 5 million people have lost SNAP since the One Big Beautiful Bill passed, and food banks are taking the overflow, per PBS NewsHour. Since Oct 1, states pay 75% of SNAP's admin costs, up from 50%, per ABC News.
The takeaway: if your volume runs through SNAP-heavy stores, plan for tighter baskets and more value packs. Community feeds community.
When life gives you lemons, check the label
The FDA tested 195 lemon juice samples for food fraud. Seven, all imported, failed the standard (4.5% of imports), and those firms landed on an import alert, per the FDA.
The takeaway: "we know our suppliers" isn't proof. A spec sheet and a lab result are.
The Slice
Cocoa came down. Candy didn't.
Cocoa peaked near $10,700 a tonne in January 2025 and was about $5,600 by July 2026, roughly half, despite a bounce since March, per IMF data on FRED. Candy and gum prices still rose 7.7% in the year to September, per the BLS. PwC puts Halloween chocolate at $5.67 a package, up 15.5%, per NBC News.

Chart: Journey. Source: FRED, St. Louis Fed: IMF Global Price of Cocoa (PCOCOUSDM) and BLS CPI for candy and chewing gum (CUUR0000SEFR02), monthly, indexed to Jan 2023.
Why the lag? Makers buy cocoa months ahead, so we're paying for the spike now. Hershey took about 14 points of North American price in Q2 while volume and mix fell about 10, per Ohio State's Alexis Villacis. Côte d'Ivoire cut its farmgate price 57%.
Our report The Price of Composition found the cheapest products carry 2.6 times more additives than the priciest. Price is a formulation choice.
The takeaway: when inputs fall, shoppers expect relief. If you can't pass it on yet, say why, or the trade-down will say it for you.
